Math Acceleration Options: Finding the Right Path for Your Student
We want to ensure every student is placed in the math course that best matches their skills, pacing, and academic goals. If you believe your student is ready for a more advanced math curriculum, our district and individual schools offer pathways for acceleration.
District-Wide Acceleration: The 7th Grade Competency Test
For students looking to skip 7th-grade math entirely, the district administers a 7th Grade Competency Test at the beginning of each calendar year.
This assessment determines whether a student has already mastered the 7th-grade curriculum and is ready to advance directly to 8th-grade math. Because this test is administered early in the calendar year, we encourage families to plan ahead if they would like their child to participate.
School-Specific Pathways
In addition to the district test, many of our schools offer their own unique math acceleration paths (such as honors courses or compacted math tracks). Because resources and scheduling vary, the specific process and options can differ from school to school. To find out exactly what pathways are available for your child and how to register, please contact your child’s upcoming school and ask to speak with the counseling center. They will guide you through their specific school process and help you make the best decision for your student.
